Activ Surgical: Improving Surgical Efficiency with AI
Surgery and surgical tools are more advanced than they’ve ever been. Where surgeons were once working by the light of oil lanterns in operating theaters, they’re now operating in advanced, state-of-the art facilities with precision tools. Some of their work is even augmented by robotics and AI.
However, there are still issues that complicate work in the surgical suite. Medical errors in particular — which account for more than a quarter of a million deaths a year in the United States — are still pervasive. Where advanced techniques and technologies are applied, surgeons also continue to rely on decades-old methods that can have adverse effects when improperly utilized.
Alumni Ventures (AV) portfolio company Activ Surgical is on a mission to resolve some of these medical errors. Founded in 2017, Activ is a digital surgery company focused on improving surgical efficiency, accuracy, patient outcomes, and accessibility. Their mission is to enhance a surgeon’s intraoperative decision-making and reduce unintended and preventable surgical complications. They achieve this mission through deploying their scalable, patent-protected software platform driven by computer vision, AI, analytics, and machine learning.
Activ’s initial solution revolves around fluorescent medical dyes that are used to help surgeons visualize blood flow and perfusion in organs in the vicinity of operation sites. To learn more about their solution, technology, and what AV likes about the company, click below.
