Supporting the Caregivers of This World

Blue Ivy Ventures interviewed Nell Meosky Luo, Yale grad and Founder/CEO of Folia Health.

Folia Health is a startup that’s allowing caregivers an easy way to capture observations of their loved ones’. Nell Meosky Luo and her Co-founder Dan Toffling.

What did you take away from your experience at Yale?

I transferred to Yale from MIT after learning about the incredible public health curriculum and resources available at Yale. While at Yale, I was able to explore several facets of the healthcare ecosystem, including basic biomedical research and funded thesis research on the impact of healthcare payment systems on care provided for pediatric obesity patients. All of that education and knowledge led me to start Folia.

What was the opportunity that inspired Folia?

Family caregivers — including parents — notice important changes in a patient’s health at home every day. What if these observations could be easily captured as data points to help understand the patient’s progress? As a company, we recognize that family caregivers have a unique perspective that can change the way that healthcare is delivered.

What does Folia Health do?

Our platform enables caregivers to record important behavioral data by answering simple, personalized multiple-choice questions. The data from these answers is then used by physicians to augment the evidence base available for treatment planning.

Where is Folia now?

We kicked off our first limited launch in October 2017, in collaboration with Maine Medical, focused on the cystic fibrosis community. We’re looking forward to adding 3–5 more collaborating clinics in CF during winter 2018, before moving on to our second focus condition in spring 2018.

What are your thoughts on the challenges that healthcare presents?

Healthcare is famous for its challenges, but it’s also a fascinating space. If you’re willing to put in the time, there’s so much to learn about not only the current labyrinth of the healthcare system, but the history of the system that laid the foundation for where we are today. When you begin to understand that history, much of the current confusion and inefficiency makes a lot more sense.

We are in a time of immense change in both the structure and the priorities of healthcare in the US. It’s exciting to be a part of the movements toward improved outcomes and a truly patient-centric approach to care.

Folia also runs a blog called The Caregiver Chronicles that focuses on the way that caregivers overcome obstacles to live their daily lives.
